We've got a font called New Dingbats, which has an open square at a, and

Subj: (Q) Original Imagewriter with new Performas?
Here's a strange combination... My parents just bought one of Apple's
new Performas. Up until now they have been using my old Mac 512Ke
with the original imagewriter. What they'd like to do (for now) is
continue to use the old Imagewriter with the new Performa (which BTW is
a Performa 200 - I think).
This presents two problems as far as I can tell:
1) Cable incompatibilities - the old 512K uses the D type connectors,
the new Performa uses the circular type. What cable should I
use to hook the two together? Where can I get one?
2) Are there system file problems that will cause this set up not
to work?
Any suggestions on how I can get these two generations of technology
to talk successfully with each other? Thanks for any help you all
can give.
Regards,
Carl Schlachte, Jr.

Subject: 13" RGB Recall. One Last Time.
Since this keeps coming up, most recently in V.11 #44, I thought
I'd post this one more time.
Note that the recall on the Apple 13" RGB monitor expires
March 15, 1993.
-------------
A defective high- voltage capacitor in certain displays
manufactured between March 1990 and July 22, 1991, can cause the
Mac as well as the monitor to shut down unexpectedly. The
affected monitors reportedly have serial numbers in the following
ranges: 7000001 through 7101012, 5378111 through 5624450 and
9000001 through 9029500.
The repair program, officially called the 13" RGB High Voltage
Capacitor Repair Extension Program, provides for free replacement
of failed capacitors until March 15, 1993.
Users who have already paid authorized Apple service providers
for out-of-warranty repairs to correct the problem are eligible
for reimbursement if they submit documentation by Aug. 15 to
Apple Computer Inc., Attention: High Voltage Capacitor
Reimbursement, P.O. Box 17214, Denver, Colo. 80217. For further

As I stated in a previous article, the build-in video on the Quadra 700/900
does NOT support 1024x768 (19" nominal) resolution at any pixel depth.
However, ALL Quadras, as well as Centris and all Apple video boards since
Macintosh 8*24/8*24GC, do support the 1152x872 (21" nominal) resolution
(the reason being Apple makes a 21" monitor but no 19" monitor).
A bit of caution. If you want to display 1152x872 on a 16/17" autoscanning
monitor, you'd better get good one (capable of about
69kHz horizontal scanning rate at 75Hz vertical refresh). The maximium
resolution stated on the monitor spec sheet (e.g. 1280x1024) is
MEANINGLESS.

No, it's only a program that can cause address errors. The document
couldn't possibly "cause" the crash. This is not to say though, that
the program could not have some bug that was not apparent when reading
other types of files.

As stated in the Read Me file, the 32-bit System Enabler will work on a

Subject: 32-Bit Enabler Problem
Greetings to all and sundry! After getting over my initial excitment of
finding the 32-Bit enabler on apple.com, I dutifully ftpd it, and installed
it on my SE/30 after removing Mode32 (the enabler landed in the System
Folder proper). Admittedly, I don't have a use for it yet because my system
configuration includes: 5MB RAM, System 7.1 (w/OmegaSANE), and a bunch of
other INITS and control panels. Nevertheless, I expect to upgrade to 20MB
of RAM in the near future, so I wanted to see if it would work.
Happily, the Memory control panel shows that I can enable 32-bit addressing
if I so desire, but the problem lies in the startup sequence. What happens
is the machine plays the normal startup noise, then goes to the "happy"
Mac, then erases the happy Mac while the disk drive whirrs. The happy Mac
then reappears and everything proceeds as it usually does (INITs and
control panels load). This doesn't seem to cause any problems, but it is
very strange behavior. What's happening?

Subject: 7.1 Font Strangeness
Perhaps someone on the Net can help me. I just got a IIsi on the
academic buy-now-that-it's-obsolete policy of my University, and
System 7.1 was already installed. After reconfiguring it for my
use (including about 35 fonts), I noticed that all Bold text now
appears as BoldItalic text. This is clear in Nisus 3.06 and in
MacWrite II; it also shows up in UltraPaint 1.0. (This suggests
that the culprit is TEdit, I suppose.) I have also installed the
new System 7.1 on my PowerBook 140, and the same problem recurs.
However, documents that display this way under 7.1 will then be
displayed correctly under 7.0.1.
What's going on? Is there any way I can get Bold text to show up
as Bold on the screen under 7.1? At the moment I can't visually
distinguish between Bold and BoldItalic text, which is very, well,
annoying.
Sorry if this is a FAQ.
You can e-mail replies to me at King.4@osu.edu. I'll summarize
for the Net if the replies are interesting.

The ci is using an ethernet card and MacTCP 1.1 (not 1.1.1 but it seems to

okay). It's also connected to an AppleTalk network but the Network control
panel is set to EtherTalk and MacTCP is set to ethernet. To make things more
difficult, the ARA Installer is on a high density disk which the SE can't read
(I just copied the differnt parts to two double density disks with the
Installer
script on both).
I would like to be able to use from home cc:Mail, telnet, ftp as well as
access
our servers, preferably over ethernet. My question is can I do this over
ethernet or do I have to reset everything to AppleTalk each time I want to use
ARA? If I can use ethernet, how do I set things (ARA) up for this?
I hope this isn't too basic a question for info-mac. Please reply to me

I don't remember exactly where I read it, but the most practical sounding
fix for a broken SIMM socket I've heard is to wrap a rubber band around the
SIMM in the busted socket and a SIMM or two in front of it. This fixes the
most common socket failure, which is broken "ears". The "ears" being
the little retainers that snap over the edges of the SIMM and
hold it upright. This won't work for fixing the very first SIMM socket,
in which case I'd try carving a chunk of pencil eraser into a good
wedge shape to fit between socket #1 and #2.

Subject: different cable for PB "disk mode"?
I thought that Apple would have learned something when they required that the
IIfx machines use a different SCSI terminator than all other MACs (in fact, a
friend of mine blew up his SCSI port because he used a mis-labeled/painted
terminator. Wonder how many are out there. . .).
Well, here we go again. I tried to set up my PB DUO 230 as an external
harddisk
so that I could copy files directly from my IIci. I rooted around in my drawer
and found what Apple calls a "HDI-30 SCSI" cable. The plugs fit on both ends.
Both machines booted properly, except that neither MAC could see the other,
although both macihines could see any SCSI device in between them. When I
asked
the local tech he told me that to do what I wanted I needed a "HDI-30 SCSI
_Disk
Adapter_" cable.
Now, they both look just alike, he says, except that the "Disk Adapter" cable
is
a dark gray, while the non-Disk Adapter cable is a lighter gray. Does this
sound
familiar? And when I asked, in all innocence, "is there an adaptor that I can
plug onto the cable I have?", well, you guessed it, I have to buy another
cable.
A _dark gray_ one.
The tech also told me that I should have no problems if I use what I have, and
just use one of the intermediary devices as a transfer point. But, is he
right?
Am I risking blowing out a SCSI port in one of my machines? Or perhaps
screwing
up files because there are two disks with the same address on the bus?
Who _REALLY_ thinks up things like this at Apple?

Any (practical) limits on disk size that TimesTwo can handle? Can a 1 GB disk
act like a 2 GB disk? How about performance issues?
I'm also wondering about reliability. Are driver-based compression schemes
any more or less reliable then "traditional" file-based methods? Is one more
difficult to recover from when the compressor goofs up?
How about compatibility? Will it work with System 7.1 on an LC III?
Can anyone point me to any reviews of TimesTwo? All I've seen are ads.
How about an email address for the manufacturer?

I recently purchaced a 15" Relisys (RE1558) SVGA to use with an LC.
It displays 256 colors at 640 x 480 no problems. Color quality and
sharpness is very good, but not Trinitron quality. Fine for my uses,
mostly word processing.
With a little coaxing with the internal adjustments I was able to stretch
the screen to slightly over 13.5" diag. I plan to display 832 x 624 at near
WYSIWYG (aprox. 78 dpi) if I can ever justify purchacing the LC III upgrade.
hat I understand, multisync monitors have to be non-interlaces and be
able to match the scan rates of your Mac at the resolution you want to
display. There were many monitors to choose from in the PC world that fit
these criteria. Lots of variation in quality. Best advise is to look at as
many monitors as you can before purchacing one.

To add 4 one meg SIMMs to a Plus, you need to remove BOTH
R8 and R9, located in an area on the PCB labelled "Ram Size"
(of something similar). Actually, this is the procedure for
adding 2 one meg SIMMs with 2 256K SIMMs also (for a 2.5

There are no pd/shareware notation programs (MIDI or non-MIDI) either.

I don't know if it helps, but at least you can try it:
Get "Font/DA-Mover 4.1", which is the System 7 compatible version and
can be found on one of those Apple Developer CDs. Copy all the fonts
>From your system file to somewhere else on the harddisk, and then combine
all of them into one single fon suitcase using F/DA-Mover. Doing this, the
font id's will probably be renumbered if there are any existing conflicts.
Then copy these fonts from the suitcase back to your system file - not
individually, but by placing the suitcase on top of the closed system
folder. Answer yes if you're asked to replace items with the same names.
(Be sure you have removed ANY TrueType fonts before!)
Hope it works, Christian. cbuser@ezinfo.vmsmail.ethz.ch

PowerKey from Sophisticated Circuit is indeed very sophisticated (PowerKey
Remote is fairly ordinary by comparison). It has four fused and filtered
power outlets (you can just plug in a power strip if you need more). These
outlets are switchable (but NOT independently) from the keyboard (the power
key) AND software. I use it to switch on and off all my peripherals, but it
can also control Macs without the Power Manager (SEs, LCs, and yes Centris
610). In its most basic form, you press the power key on your keyboard to
turn everything on and select Shut Down from the Special menu to turn
everything off (with delay if you wish). It can perform tasks during
startup, shutdown, periodically, or at any time. These tasks include
running a QuicKey macro, sending an Apple Event, executing an XCMD, turning
everything off AND turning everything on. How it accomplish this last task
is truly remarkable. It can turn you computer (and peripherals) on at
pre-scheduled time (or periodically) using your computer's internal clock
(while the computer is off). With QuicKeys and Frontier you can perform
most tasks completely unattended. PowerKey can also receive Apple Events,
so you can use Easy Alarm (a calendar program which has more sophisticated
scheduling/programming capability) to send Apple Events to PowerKey.
PowerKey Remote works with PowerKey to turn on your computer/peripherals
when the phone rings. It won't differentiate between voice and data (or
fax). The bundled software Unwake is very nice, though. It can turn
everything off after a specified period of inactivity. It can monitor your
keyboard, mouse, or serial port activity independently.
PowerKey sells for around $75 (with QuicKeys Lite, upgradable to full
version for $50) and PowerKey Remote for $35 (both street prices).
BTW, I'm not affiliated with Sophisticated Circuits other than being a very
satisfied customer.

Subject: Printing and Fonts
I need some help with printing different fonts. Here are the two scenarios
that have been driving me crazy:
1. I type a few lines in a font of which I only have bitmaps. After I give
the
print command, the Finder icon blinks on and off; when I go to the Finder, I
get a message that "the application Print Monitor has quit unexpectedly due to
a type 1 error." Then the Print Monitor icon blinks on and off; when I go to
Print Monitor, it tells me that the file which I tried to print is damaged,
would I like to try again.
2. I type a few lines in a font of which I only have TrueType. After I give
the print command, the Finder icon blinks on and off; when I go to the Finder,
I get a message that the file can't be printed because of "Print error, -50."
I have tried both scenarios with the fonts copied directly into the system,
and
with the fonts in suitcases opened by CarpetBag. The same thing happens both
ways. I have also tried both scenarios with ATM 2.0.3 turned on and turned
off; makes no difference.
I am using a Mac IIsi with 9M RAM; system 7; LaserWriter IIg.
The best I can tell, the only thing that will print is a font with a
corresponding PostScript file in the extensions folder and which is also
resident in the printer's ROM. But surely I can print more than that!
Thanks for the help.

Did Rodime, the now-defunct maker of hard drives, ever release

We have a variety of Cobra drives from Rodime. The latest
formatter for this type of drive we could find was 1.1.8. It works
fine on System 6.0.7, but is very quirky with System 7.0.1.
We have another formatter from Rodime (for the non-Cobra

poor experiences with 1.1.8 we are very suspicious it won't work
either.
Meanwhile, if Rodime formatters won't do the job, what is

Ever since I bought my Mac LC, I have noticed that every now and
then the GUI will behave as if the mouse button is pushed down when
it is not. When I try to type, it apears that the shift key is
pushed down when it is not. There is no way to predict when this
will happen.
I have had various components replaced, and the problem always
returns. One fairly knowledgeable technician has suggested that
the problem is static electricity, and the interference is more
likely to occur in the winter months.
I, too, would be interested to know whether static electricity is
a reasonable explaination, or whether it would be advisable to
fight for a replacement of the entire machine.

Hello, Mac wizards.
Here's a great way to increase your vocabulary: every time you

Bought a new Q700 with full 2MB VRAM, took it home and found that 3/4 of the
screen gets completely screwed up in "Millions" mode (but is fine at 256
colors)
with my Apple 14" Mac Color Display. Service technician actually went as far
as
swapping motherboards, before we realized that the computer was fine all
along.
24-bit works fine on the Apple 16" monitor, but when hooked to the 14" it went
screwy!! This is very frustrating. Anyone seen this???
Of course, the Apple Customer Assistance Center guy says "Gee, we've got about
a
hundred Quadra 700's in 24-bit mode with the 14" monitors running just in this
room" or something like that. Somehow, I don't quite believe that. (13" maybe;
we didn't try that, but how could that NOT work?)
Someone please tell me what the $&%#@!* is going on here!!! Thanks.

Subject: Why ".bin" add on?
To All:
I used binhex4 to open a sound .hqx file. The result was:
filename.hqx.bin It didn't do anything but add the
.bin maybe someone can give me a clue as to what happened?
Thanks!

Subject: Why write Un*x instead of Unix?
I've been wondering why people submitting articles to this digest sometimes
avoid writing "Un*x" instead of using the real word "Unix." It'd be news to me
if "Unix" was a trademark. Does anybody know?
